Years ago, I sat in a boardroom where ten people were supposed to align on a single campaign message.

Two hours later, we had eighteen versions of the same sentence — and zero direction.

The energy in the room was familiar. Polite nods. Vague approvals. Ideas diluted until they meant nothing.

It wasn't collaboration. It was avoidance dressed up as teamwork.

When it was my turn to speak, I said:

"We're not missing ideas. We're missing clarity."

The room went silent.

Because what we actually needed wasn't another brainstorm. It was a boundary. Someone had to draw the line between options and the story we were actually telling.

That day I learned something that has shaped my entire career:

Clarity isn't consensus. It's direction.

And direction requires courage, especially in rooms where competing opinions feel louder than the purpose itself.

In communication and in change, that's the hardest part.

We mistake endless input for collaboration. When what teams actually crave is conviction.

Here's the truth most people won't say out loud:

Committees don't create clarity. They create comfort.

People hide behind alignment because it feels safer than leading. Comfort keeps the room calm. It doesn't move a message forward.

Great communicators don't collect opinions: they filter them. Not every comment deserves equal weight. Not every voice determines direction. The job is to separate useful insight from noise and build the message around what matters.

Alignment should be a checkpoint, not the creative process.

If your message depends on unanimous approval, it will always be mediocre. The goal isn't agreement. It's coherence.

And when someone is finally willing to say "this is the story, this is what it means, this is where we're going" — the room exhales.

People crave conviction more than consensus.

So the next time you're in a meeting that keeps circling without landing, ask the only question that matters:

Are we trying to agree, or are we trying to get clear?

One preserves comfort.

The other creates momentum.
